Move Up in Business by Improving Your Vocabulary

A strong business vocabulary is vital in today’s society. Business vocabulary is defined to contain “all the specialized terms and definitions of concepts that a given organization or community uses in their speaking and writing in the course of doing business.” Creating a good quality business vocabulary is a critical success factor in order forge an unambiguous collection of business policies and rules for use by a business community in order to enable clear and concise communication.

Vocabulary in business must be exact if it is to be effective, particularly in highly specialized industries. Unique business vocabulary terms are found in many different fields such as advertising, banking and stocks, bookkeeping and financial administration, business and commercial letters, fashion, human resources, insurance, legal, logistics, marketing, production and manufacturing and sales and acquisitions, Internet development and marketing, etc. When going into a new specialty it is critical to know the vocabulary particular to that industry to avoid communication misunderstandings.

Incorporating enjoyable activities such as word games, crosswords, speaking exercises and group games, can add variety and interest while cultivating a business vocabulary. These approaches have also been found very effective in enhancing learning and retention while improving knowledge and understanding of core business terminology.

Business effectiveness must be continuously examined in order to improve efficiency, and new business processes in order to leapfrog past competitors and gain an edge. Maintaining a strong and current business vocabulary is a key in this undertaking, especially in this era of rapid changes and advancements in technology that ripple out and effect business activities and practices in virtually every way.

No matter how broad your business vocabulary becomes it must kept current and with trends, changes up-to-date terminology.
