Getting to Know How To Write a Good Resume

By Sid | January 23, 2008

Let’s face it. Unless you have been really lucky and landed your dream job on the first attempt, you have probably had more than one job. Fast food places and retail stores usually do not require a resume, but for those office jobs, you will need a few resume writing tips to get you through the first draft. Resume writing help can come from a variety of places and people. The main thing to know is that there are different types to showcase different work skills and experiences.

There are a few different types of resumes from which to choose. The type you will use depends largely on your work experience and your education. First, there is the Chronological resume. It is just as it sounds. It is a resume that goes by dates and is best used when you are looking to showcase your dedication to your career. If you have had multiple jobs in the past, then this type is not for you. To write an effective resume, you must choose the best style for your circumstances.

Next on the list for resume writing tips and types is the Functional resume. You will use this type if you want your potential employer to focus on your skills rather than the number of jobs you have had in the past. If you have had diverse working experiences and training, then this is the one for you. You will still need to list your past employers, but rather than focus on dates, you will detail your accomplishments and duties.

The final type of functional resume is the Combination. It is exactly as it sounds. It is a combination of the Functional and Chronological resume. Use this resume writing style if you have been in one career and intend to keep pursuing jobs in this career path. It will list your past work experience and the skills you have acquired, along with detailed information about the typical day-to-day job duties you have performed.

Once you understand the differences in the types of resumes, writing a resume is not that difficult. If you find that the resume templates are not helpful, then you can find resume writing tips and resume samples on plenty of websites. Another great location for discovering tips is to visit your local library or bookstore. Many books have been written to help people master the art of writing an effective resume.
