I believe that what people forget when they are applying for jobs is that they forget what their goals are. It is important when applying to first make a list of things that you want to reach both short term and long term and then to methodically work out how to reach your goals.
When applying for a lawyer training contract, maybe the most essential part of advice I can give is that you make sure that you do your research. If you think that one spends a large majority of their life in the workplace, it is important to understand what the job entails and whether you will be suited to the environment. In this case, by researching law companies, speaking to solicitors who have many years of experience and talking to colleagues, you are likely to get a good idea of the pros and cons of becoming a solicitor.
Many people overlook the fact that employers look for people that they can get on with. After all, if they are working with someone who they do not like then fruitfulness levels are likely to be lower. You can have the most wonderful CV in the world but if you do not get on well with people then they will not offer you the job. In this way, it is essential to rehearse doing an interview with a friend and being clear on your ideas and thoughts before conducting the interview so that you feel more comfortable a) with what you are talking about and b) what type of questions the employer may ask you.
The last part advice that I can give is the reality that you have to be prepared for failure. Often it is very easy for graduates to think that just because they have a level they can walk into any job that they want. Persistence is often the key when applying for the perfect training contract as inevitably you will be faced with a few rejections when you start applying. Ideally, you should try and not take these rejections personally. Remain polite and try and keep on friendly terms with the employer as there may well be a time when another vacancy opens up within the firm.
