I was asked this question by one of my students in Memphis, TN. “I have been doing the same job for over 20 years. Now that I am laid off, I am not sure if I want to keep doing this work. I am not sure what I want to do. Is there any hope for me?” Check out my answer below…

If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know that you arrived? More importantly, if you are confused about your future, how will that translate to the employer? The good news is that there is help.

I recommend to my clients that they make a list - things that they do not like and would never consider doing. I find that once people compile a “hate to do list” they find it easier to focus on the more positive things.

Make another list - things that they have achieved, that they do well, and that they enjoy. Jobseekers will begin to see a pattern arising from these two lists.

Next, visit your local career center and take one of several assessment tests that are available at these locations. These tests are quite accurate if you take the time to answer each question, answer the questions honestly, and do not give the questions a lot of thought. Chances are, your first responses will be the true responses. At the conclusion of the test, you will be provided with a list of skills that you are (depending on the test) either proficient in or that best suit your personality. Several assessment tests will then provide you with a list of related careers, experience and education needed, the salary involved, and other specifics.

Last, speak to those whose opinions matter most to you. Ask them to assess you and tell you where they think your talents lie. It doesn’t mean they are correct but it does give you an idea of what others are thinking.
