Telecommuting opportunities are on the rise every day. It refers to an employment type where you can work from home or any other location of your preference, and communicate with the office or your employer via telephone calls, fax messages, email messages or any other communication method facilitated by technology. As it may have already occurred to you, telecommuters have the best life. They have the luxury of working according to the hours they want, and can do so in the comforts of their own home. But all is not rosy for telecommuters. Since there is no set working time for telecommuters, they could end up being less efficient than those working normal working hours. Or a lack of structure could also mean that telecommuters work too much, which thenleads to many health issues. Also working from home could be a lonely job sometimes. They may also not show any feelings of loyalty to the company which is a concerning factor for employers. Always open to distractions could be another reason they do not work to their best capability. And of course, there is no chance of going any higher up the corporate ladder.

That being said, telecommuting also has its advantages. As said above, there is the luxury of working at your own house in your own time. They can afford time for their family as well as their favorite leisure activities. Second, working at home also means that telecommuters do not bear any transportation costs which again mean that they get more value for the work they do. With this lack of travel, there is no more pollution added into the environment in the form of noise or carbon gases. Finally, telecommuters sometimes hold more than one telecommuting position allowing them to generate more income than the traditional workers.

There are many things expected out of a telecommuter. Most importantly, telecommuters are expected to be honest and loyal to the company they work for. They are expected to put in a set amount of hours as per the agreed terms and are expected to take on a good workload per day.

Being dishonest or untrustworthy is reason enough to get fired from the job. Trust being a funny fixation, cannot be built upon once it is broken, especially when you are not visible to the other party. Because of this the relationship between the telecommuter and employer comes with great responsibilities.
