If you are a household with young kids, you will have an understanding of how difficult it is to keep a career going while putting the requirements of your kids first. Normally either husband or wife will become the primary care provider and the other will be the main income earner.

How hard must this become if mummy or daddy is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or dies suddenly? As well as the heartache all members of the family are facing, there could well be a need to re-think the current job situation.

With a sudden death, your mind is in a spin, the last thing you want to think about is work, but there may well be a need to consider how the current working pattern is going to fit with the new one-parent family position you now find yourself in. If you were the main breadwinner, perhaps you used to be involved in business travel, or working long hours each day. This work model would need to change as you are required to undertake the care of your kids. Will your job allow for the change or will you need to look for alternatives? Could you Work From Home? If you were the mum or dad who had most of the responsibility for looking after the kids, then probably your job would still fit around your needs, but is it still financially viable to keep up with this job, or will you require more money than this will allow?

If your partner has a life-threatening illness, then the heartache is a lengthy process. In the beginning there is the resentment of why your family is facing this and the firm knowledge that at some time in the near future you shall be alone with the kids who have also had to see their mum’s and dad’s suffering through the illness. Following this it may be that you view your job position. Can you do some of your Work From Home in order to spend time caring for your partner and kids? Would you be able to continue the same pattern of work long term or will you need to reconsider your options in the years ahead?

Some of these roles will afford better pay than others, and some require more skills. Search for your perfect job and maybe this will be one less thing for you to worry about.
