California requires a special set of requirements for ultrasound technicians. Aspiring ultrasound techs who are based in California are obliged to follow through the requirements in order to fill in a job vacancy.

Today, there is an increasing demand for sonogram technician professionals. Patients now opt for medical diagnostic sonography as it is safer compared to other diagnostic methods. From 2008-2016, the rate of employment is expected to rise at 19%. This is supported by a survey led by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This employment growth will be providing more job opportunities for incoming ultrasound technicians. Aspiring ultrasound techs in California are urged to accomplish every requirement that the state asks.

1. Education
Many employers look at the type of education an applicant has attained and may base the latter’s value and skills on his education. Although it is more recommended for students to choose the bachelor’s degree program, the associate degree is also good for those who are financially restrained. The years needed to accomplish a degree varies between a bachelor’s and associate’s degree. To complete a bachelor’s degree, one must spend 4 years of training and education. Meanwhile, only 2 years are needed for one to be an associate’s degree holder. Graduates of a bachelor’s degree program are more skilled and knowledgeable in the belief of many medical employers. Just as in any other field of practice, the more exposed you are, the more you become adept at the craft. This, however, does not apply to all employers. For some employers, what’s important is that they will not have difficulty training the newly hired technician in his specific tasks.

2. Authorization
Licensure is not obligatory for all ultrasound technicians. For ultrasound techs, it is recommended by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to get a license issued by the ARDMS to facilitate employment. Some medical employers need to see a license in order for them to be convinced that the sonography applicant is competent enough. Sometimes, ARDMS members are being helped by the organization by means of looking for jobs which fit them. It is very important for aspiring sonographers to graduate from an accredited school in order to qualify for the ARDMS licensure exam. Further clinical training for a year is required of graduates from non-accredited ultrasound technician schools. Only after then will he gain eligibility to sit at the registry examination.

3. Specialization
Some of the medical employers are in need of the ultrasound tech requirements such as the sub-specialization. Disorders of the heart and vein are best attended to by sonographers who specialize in this field. For this reason, medical employers sometimes require specialization from their sonography employees. The said specializations are partially comprised of echocardiography, vascular, and cardiovascular sonography. These sub-specialty courses take at least a year to finish. A qualifying exam is usually given to the students at the end of the course. Only after they have passed the exam they will be awarded a certificate.

Before they can land a job in sonography, ultrasound sonographers must have the necessary information they need regarding the requirements unique to California.
